Baldwin Park celebrated a historic moment Wednesday as students, staff, alumni, city officials, and proud family members gathered to honor hometown native and Major League Baseball (MLB) player Bernardo Flores with a street dedication in his name.

Its ceremony commenced at 10:00 a.m. at the intersection of Cleary Drive and Puente Avenue, just outside Baldwin Park High School—the starting point of Flores’ remarkable journey to professional baseball.

“Today, we celebrate not just an athlete but a role model,” said Baldwin Park Mayor Emmanuel J. Estrada. “Bernardo’s success story is a result of countless hours of dedication and hard work, embodying the spirit of Baldwin Park and serving as an inspiration to the youth in our community. Through all of his success, Bernardo has always stayed connected to the Baldwin Park community, serving as a mentor, coach and philanthropist in our community.”

Organized by the City of Baldwin Park in collaboration with the Baldwin Park Unified School District, it highlighted Flores’ exceptional achievements and enduring connection to the community.

Baldwin Park City Council approved the street dedication with a 4-1 vote during its September 18, 2024, meeting.

In an interview with Baldwin Park News, Flores shared that his love for baseball began during his childhood.

“I’ve always dreamed of being a professional athlete,” he said, expressing heartfelt gratitude for the encouragement and support he received throughout his early years.

Flores credited Baldwin Park High School for shaping his career path, remembering the inspiration and guidance he received there.

He particularly acknowledged the influence of staff member Jake Barendregt, whose mentorship helped drive him to succeed both on and off the field.

At the ceremony, city officials revealed a special street sign in honor of Flores.

Afterward, Flores had the unique privilege of installing the sign himself at Cleary Drive and Puente Avenue, securing the final screw into the post.

Its sign read: “Bernardo Flores” Baldwin Park High School Class of 2013 University of Southern California (USC) 2016 Drafted 2016: MLB Debut in 2020 with White Sox Distinguished Son of the City of Baldwin Park This Street is Dedicated in His Honor Dedicated November 20, 2024”

Flores’ story began at Baldwin Park High School, where he emerged as a standout player on the school’s baseball team.

After graduating in 2013, he continued his academic and athletic journey at the University of Southern California (USC), showcasing his talent as an elite collegiate athlete.

In 2016, he reached a major milestone when he was drafted by the Chicago White Sox, marking the start of his professional baseball career.

Since then, he has played for several MLB teams, including the White Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals.

Despite the demands of his professional sports career, Flores has stayed deeply connected to Baldwin Park.

He frequently returns during the offseason to mentor and coach young athletes, sharing his experiences and motivating future generations to pursue their dreams.

Flores is often seen working alongside his former coach, Jake Barendregt, helping to coach the new generation of Baldwin Park High School baseball players.

Beyond baseball, Flores is deeply involved in community initiatives, using his platform to give back to the city that shaped him.

His street dedication serves as both a tribute to Flores’ outstanding achievements and a source of inspiration for Baldwin Park’s youth, reminding them that with determination and support, they too can achieve greatness.
